What genres would you call the following bands?
Fountains of Wayne
Fountains of Wayne i would classify as Pop Punk, dunno the other 3
OK, there are 2 definitions of pop punk:
Pop-py punk (the correct one) including bands like The Queers, The Mr. T Experience, The Unlovables, Dirt Bike Annie, etc.
Pop-ular "punk" including bands like A New Found Glory or Sum 41.
I've never thought of Fountains of Wayne to be particularly punky in any way...I'm curious to hear how you categorized them there!
P.S. Who the heck is this?
guitar music is guitar music...
Rock, Pop, Alternative, maybe Punk, Metal, or Industrial as sub genres if you feel like getting picky. Just pick one!
Genre mash-ups like Pop-punk are just buzz words made by music critics. That'd be like me putting the White Stripes under Garage Rock. It's just silly.
YOU'RE silly! Genres are fun. I refuse to believe you have "guitar music" as a genre in your itunes.
Rock covers a lot, and I have plenty of bands classified that way, but there is totally such a thing as punk. And industrial, unfortunately.
well of course it's fine if you want to make sub-genres. I have a few in my list... I just think it's silly to make weird, hybrid sub-sub genres like "pop-punk" or "indie rock" or "folk rock" or "something.
Don't worry so much! fewer genres means a cleaner, easier to navigate library. Plus, what happens when you have a band that changes their sound from album to album?!
Who's worried? I'm not worried! This is fun for me. I don't mind having lots of genres. What if I only want to hear a certain kind of rock? I can select Synth Pop, Synth Rock, and Spunk Rock and shuffle them! If I just click on Rock, I'm going to get a huge amount of stuff I'm not in the mood for.
And when a band changes, you categorize the album accordingly. Like the first two Green Day albums are pop punk, but after that they're rock. And Christmas Caravan by Squirrel Nut Zippers is Christmas.
